In Le Centre commercial (The Shopping center), Po Sim Sambath was interested in the difference between the imagined urbanization of a neighborhood and the sociability developd therein by its residents. The life which happens at and around a shopping center about to be demolished does not in the least resemble the idealized images of its real estate agents. On one hand, the planning of a neighborhood must present fictionalized lives of its residents when, on the other hand, those who have been there forever are shaken up by all the urban changes. The artist places into this setting this failing shopping center, in remembrance of the groups of residents who are always left behind on the edges of the grand projects.
